Today we headed thru familiar territory. Working our way East and checking out a few places that we missed as we traveled west. When we took the Santa Fe portion of route 66, we missed Albuquerque and several towns. Join as we take a peak of our day.
Here is our surprise and blessing for the day. As we were snooping around the outside of the mission, taking pictures, this American Indian and lady came out of the mission. She called to us. Alfred was from the mission and had taken her into the mission, she was also a tourist , She was so impressed she wanted us to go inside also.
Alfred took us into the mission. It was started in 1600's and completed in 1811. (No pictures were allowed to be taken inside. :( but I respected their wishes)
The ceiling was made from logs carried 25 miles away where the pines grew. They never touched the ground. There was art on the sides, on the alter and in front of the sanctuary. There were murals on hides of buffalo, deer and elk. One of the murals, had been carried to the water during prayer times and the corner dipped in the river. Now it is too brittle to move.
Too much to describe it all, but it gave us an appreciation that the native Americans had a love for a God they did not know until the Catholic priest came. Very different than the relationship we have with Jesus, but God was evident in Alfred's description of all the things in the mission.
