The giants on Route 66 are over sized advertising statues. They come in many shapes and sizes. We will be keeping our eyes out for these and many more !
The "Muffler Man" was the iconic giant that called attention to shops all along the route 66. A tribe of fiberglass titans, 18 to 25 feet tall, stands watch along the vibrant roadside landscape. The first statues that we spotted held big car mufflers, so we named them "Muffler Men."
International Fiberglass, that turned out thousands of commercial statues in the 1960s and 70s. International Fiberglass took a single statue mold created for a cafe and parlayed it into a roadside industry.
This original one has lived in California since 1963.
Today there are Muffler men all over the country, they are bought and moved wherever the new owner desires.
There are only a few muffler men left on route 66.
Click on the Muffler man to find a link to a map showing where all these giants are now.
I hope we see one of these giants or one of the other "fiberglass humanoids!"
