Today is a Sunday, so I was just wondering what Route 66 holds as far as churches. The question for today as we prepare for our drive thru New Mexico, is "How has Christ affected the people and places in Route 66? "
Hmmm.. let's see what we can find out......

This picture shows a crumbling church by Tucumcari, NM. It had a gas station that was flourishing just across the street.
Sad to see in such disrepair.

This is Cuervo's Catholic church.
Not sure whether it was abandoned now, or not. There are some signs that it's been maintained, and was certainly in better shape than some of its neighbors...
Cuervo New Mexico is a ghost town now.
It was started in 1901, with it's top population at about 300 in the route 66 heyday.

"Pueblo and Plains Indians, Spanish conquerors and missionaries, Mexican and Anglo armies, Santa Fe Trail settlers and adventurers, tourists on the railroad, Route 66 and Interstate 25...the Pecos Valley has long been a backdrop that invites contemplation about where our civilization comes from and where it is going."
Thousands of years of this rich history is preserved for visitors to Pecos National Historical Park.

Santa Fe New Mexico was founded by the American Indians in about 900AD. Part of Mexico, then Texas when it first became part of the US. It was 1848 when Santa Fe officially became part of New Mexico. In 1821, the Santa Fe Trail became America's first great international commercial highway, and for nearly sixty years thereafter was one of the nation's great routes of adventure and western expansion.
When route 66 was initially built it included Santa Fe, but in 1937 Roure 66 was rerouted and straightened, which eliminated Santa Fe.
Below are few of the oldest Catholic churches which still alive and well in Santa Fe. Click on each picture to see more information.

Crossroads Bible Fellowship Church 2412 Old Route 66 Edgewood, NM
I found one other church listed on Route 66 that warmed my heart. The only picture I found was on google maps and I could not copy it. This little church is a thriving non-denominational church. Very much in the modern culture, with a love for Christ and reaching people with His love.
Praying for their ministry!

....The answer to my question... Christ has a very long and rich history in New Mexico. And of course there is a future there as well.. or at least until He comes to take us all home.
