The Cadillac Ranch is a folk art piece near Amarillo, Texas. It seems that in 1974 an oil Tycoon wanted to have a piece of art that would baffle his neighbors. He contacted Ant Farm ( A group of hippy artists from San Francisco) known for making large art works.) They planted 10 Cadillacs into the ground nose first. They are supposedly at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza
In 1997 the installation was quietly moved by a local contractor two miles to the west, to a cow pasture along I 40 in order to place it farther from the limits of the growing city.
This picture shows Stanley Marsh 3, the financier of the project as they moved the cars.

Cadillac Ranch is visible from the highway, and though it is located on private land, visiting it (by driving along a frontage road and entering the pasture by walking through an unlocked gate) is tactily encouraged. In addition, writing graffiti on or otherwise spray-painting the vehicles is now encouraged, and the vehicles, which have long since lost their original colors, are wildly decorated.
The Cadillac Ranch is located along route 40 about 10 miles west of Amarillo, Tx.
The 10 caddies chosen were from 1949, 1950, 1954, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1962, and 1963. They represent the changes in the tailfins of these classic Cadillac's.
I believe the 1963 was the last of the tailfins.

The concept of graffiti happened very early in it's history and is now embraced by the artists.
One is encouraged to bring a can or two of spray paint. They even say that you may want to bring a can of primer if you want your message seen well.
"Leave a name, or a message to be read or painted over..."
Over the years people have painted the cars for special reasons.
